We support every stage of a horse's career, from initial training to recovery, all within a calm and supportive environment.

Breaking

Breaking in a horse marks the beginning of its ridden career and is a crucial stage in its development. This initial training phase ford the foundation of the horse’s future performance and behaviour. At SG Equine, we recognise that each horse is unique and no horse should be rushed, so while our approach is tailored to the individual needs of each animal, our core objective will always be to produce a horse that is relaxed, accepting of the rider and their aids as well as being prepared for their future careers. Our breaking process is methodical and thorough, allowing each horse to progress at its own pace. We start by giving horses ample time for backing, ensuring they are comfortable and confident before advancing to the next stage. The process begins with groundwork and long reining, which helps the horse learn to find its balance, steer effectively, stand and be prepared for the riders aids once they are on board. Before moving to ridden work, we begin the backing process in the stable, leaning over and sitting on the horse, ensuring the horse is accepting and comfortable with the rider’s weight and movements. Only once the horse is at ease do we move to riding in a lunge pen. As horses progress, we take time to produce them on the flat, to create suppleness and give them a good grounding for a career change after racing. They are then introduced to the round and straight gallops, where they become accustomed to being ridden alongside other horses at various paces. This experience is crucial for developing their confidence and adaptability, preparing them for the busy and dynamic environment of race training and racing yards. By being methodical and treating each horse as an individual, we produce well rounded, confident horses that enjoy ridden work and are not only prepared for their racing careers but also adaptable and confident, setting them up for success both on and off the track following their retirement from racing.

Pre-training

With excellent facilities at our disposal and based in Newmarket, the home of racing, we are ideally situated to meet a variety of equestrian needs. Whether you are looking to bring horses back into work, maintain the fitness of horses who are already in work, or provide them with a refreshing change of scenery, our setup is designed to accommodate these requirements seamlessly. During the summer months, we offer turnout options tailored to different needs. Horses in full work can benefit from additional paddock time, which allows them to stretch their legs and enjoy some natural, open space. This extra turnout not only supports their physical fitness but also contributes positively to their mental well being. For horses that might need a brief mid-season break, our facilities provide an ideal environment for a mini holiday. This downtime helps to rejuvenate horses, aiding in their recovery between races and ensuring they stay in peak condition throughout the racing season. Our focus is on creating an environment that supports both the physical and mental health of the horses, which is crucial for maintaining high performance levels and overall well being. By offering a variety of turnout options and using our fantastic facilities, we aim to enhance recovery, sustain fitness, and contribute to a successful and balanced racing career for each horse.

Rehabilitation

We provide comprehensive care for horses returning to ridden work after injury. Our facilities are equipped to support every phase of recovery, ensuring that each horse receives tailored attention and care throughout the rehabilitation process. Our stables are designed to create a calm and supportive environment, essential for effective healing whilst a horse is on box rest. We understand that a peaceful and stress-free setting is crucial for recovery, so we maintain a tranquil atmosphere in our yard to help minimise any additional stress or discomfort for the horses in our care. As horses progress through their recovery, we offer a range of services to support their gradual return to ridden work. This includes carefully managed in-hand walking, controlled turnout, and targeted physiotherapy exercises to help rebuild strength and flexibility. Our experienced team closely monitors each horse’s progress and adjusts their rehabilitation program as needed to ensure a safe and effective transition back to full work. Our close proximity to the leading equine hospitals in the UK make us ideal for horses in a condition unable to travel long distances following complex surgery following injuries such as fractures, it also allows follow up care with the same surgical team to ensure the horse has the benefit of a continuous treatment plan. The yard’s serene and relaxed environment is specifically designed to aid in the recovery process. By focusing on providing a supportive and low-stress setting, we help horses regain their fitness and confidence, paving the way for a successful return to racing. Our goal is to ensure that each horse not only recovers fully but also returns to work in optimal condition, ready to perform at their best.
